2012 Year in Review

Dear Fellow Scouters,

As the year 2012 draws to a close we wanted to report to you the status of the Colonel Drake District. As a Boy Scout District we are tasked with providing to all, the opportunities that the Boy Scouts of America offers. That often is measured in terms of total membership of youths & adults and neighborhood units. For the first time in several years both those numbers are down from the year before. The District Committee has plans in place to increase both membership and units in 2013. We are looking forward to growth next year.

As a district we continue to offer a quality Roundtable every month to help you develop your programs and share resources for success. In 2012 we held a Klondike Derby (Hosted by Troop 412), Pinewood Derby (Hosted by Pack & Troop 403), District Dinner,  Spring Membership Drive, Spring Camporee (Hosted by Troop 82), Day Camp,  Summer Camp, Fall Recruitment, and Fall Camporee (Hosted by Troop 55). Thirteen boys have passed their Eagle Scout Board of review during this the 100th anniversary of the rank of Eagle Scout.  It has been a busy year. All of these events and more are being planned for you in 2013.

The 2012 Friend of Scouting Family (98% of goal) and Community (291% of goal) Campaigns were huge successes. We planned and offered fun events and great opportunities for your Scouts to raise money so they can go to camp, and for our neighbors to financial support Scouting. Bowl-a-Thons, Bucket Brigade for Scouting, Spring Popcorn & Nut Sale, Two Car Cruises for Scouting, and the Fall Popcorn Sale, were fun and a big help.  Next year’s FOS campaign is already underway and we hope for your continued support.

The French Creek Council launched a new website (http://frenchcreek-bsa.org), have you seen it lately?  Facebook pages can be found for each of our four Districts, Day Camp, Custaloga Town Scout Reservation, 2013 National Scout Jamboree and the Order of the Arrow Langundowi Lodge 46. A lot of new technology is here and coming soon, Together with the National Council we use online re-chartering and advancement, Good Turn for America service project reporting and special tools to track your units own Journey to Excellence. This year brought new Journey to Excellence and Messengers of Peace programs.  New Merit Badges for Welding, Kayaking, Search & Rescue were launched this year.

The safety of the children in our program is our first concern. Two deep leadership, Youth Protection Training, online training, and the new Cyber Chip resource for Cybersafety/Cyberbullying show our commitment to our communities. After visiting with families in Newtown, CT the Chief Scout Executive said this:

“Boy Scouts of America is among the constants that young people and their families can look to for guidance and support. We need strong shoulders, to be sure, to bear such a burden, but it is a load that we have carried honorably and well for more than a century. Our nation’s young people depend on the values we teach, and we will never let them down. I am so proud to be working shoulder to shoulder with each of you in service to the youth of America.”

— Wayne Brock

We hope that you had a lot of fun in 2012. We are planning a great 2013 for you! Get plugged in, keep in touch and we hope to see you by our Council fires. So, from all of us on the Colonel Drake District Committee & The French Creek Council, we wish you and your family Happy Holidays and a Happy Healthy New Year.
