On the Trail to Eagle

The Trail to First Class program is designed for boys and girls who have just begun Scouting and are working toward the rank of First Class.  The program centers around the outdoor requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class.

Trail to First Class is available as either a Monday - Tuesday or a Wednesday - Thursday program.

The staff will work with each Scout on basic Scouting skills, including:

  • Knot Tying
  • First Aid
  • Use of Camp Tools
  • Hiking
  • Tree and Plant Identification
  • Flag Ceremonies
  • Fire-building
  • Compass Skills and Orienteering

Through the Braves program, young Scouts are given a structured program to adjust to life at camp and to introduce them to the program around them.  While the Braves program meets at a base area in the center of camp, the whole camp itself is the classroom.  Activities are conducted on the trails and in the program areas.  Scouts are instructed in small groups, according to rank, and learning is hands-on, with low camper-to-staff ratios.

More than half of the Scout’s week is still available for additional merit badge work or open programming.

Scouts will practice skills at Braves, but ultimately it remains the Scoutmaster’s right to sign off on completion of a rank requirement.  A record of all skills completed will be given to the Scout and to the Scoutmaster at the end of the week.

Scouts who are only missing a few requirements to rank up do not need to sign up for the full two day session.  The Braves staff will be happy to provide a “Braves Take Out” session to work on individual requirements with Scouts during open program time.
